Celery Pine / Tānēkaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides)
A graceful and distinctive native conifer, Tānēkaha is known for its celery-like, flattened leaf structures (called phylloclades) and upright, elegant form. Naturally found in lowland forests of the North Island and northern South Island, it can also thrive in sheltered parts of South Westland. Tānēkaha prefers well-drained soil and some shelter from harsh coastal conditions, making it ideal for bush restoration or as a specimen tree in larger gardens. Over time, it develops attractive reddish bark and can reach heights of 10–20m.
