Earlier this week, a small but dedicated team from the Ōkārito Plant Project visited the Purcell Reserve to kick off some essential spring maintenance. Paula and Swade from Ōkārito Boat Tours, Ian Cooper from Ōkārito Kiwi Tours, and Antje Fricke from the Ōkārito Native Plants Nursery all joined forces to help the young plants thrive at this special site.
The Purcell Reserve, a beautiful 12-acre piece of land set aside by the Purcell Family Trust, has seen incredible growth since our initial planting and clearing of invasive plants last year. But with spring’s abundance of rain, the grass and weeds have shot up fast! Our team spent the day clearing overgrown grass, cutting back invasive plants, and giving the young trees space to grow and thrive.
The best part? Nature is already responding! While working, we were thrilled to spot and hear a range of native birds—tui, bellbirds, fantails, silvereyes, and even a warbler. Signs like these show us that our planting efforts are creating spaces for these birds to flourish.
We’re grateful for the ongoing partnership with the Purcell Family Trust and are excited to return at the end of November for more planting and maintenance work. Every bit of care brings us closer to seeing this land fully transformed into a thriving habitat for our native species.
Next week we’re off to Fox Glacier and our very first planting site from July 2023! Stay tuned as we continue this journey of restoration and regeneration!
